South Carolina [South Carolina]
a south-eastern US state on the Atlantic Ocean, also called the Palmetto State. The capital and largest city is Columbia. The state was named after the English king ↑Charles I and was one of the original ↑thirteen colonies. It produces ↑textiles, fruit, tobacco, chickens and ↑cattle. Its tourist attractions include the Fort Sumter National Monument and the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia.
